823 War Victory Memorial Introduction
On August 23, 1958, the shocking "823 Bombardment" began. At 6:30 PM that afternoon, the People's Liberation Army of China concentrated 342 pieces of various artillery to carry out a carpet bombing of the Kinmen area, causing a torrential downpour of shells, with dust flying everywhere. Over the course of two hours, more than 57,500 shells were fired. Two years after the 823 Bombardment (in 1960), the People's Liberation Army launched smaller scale bombardments known as "June 17" and "June 19," and thereafter continued to fire intermittently until 1978, when the era of bombardments was officially declared over. In total, the People's Liberation Army fired 474,910 various types of shells, setting the record for the highest density of shellfall in the world. Located at the intersection of Huandao East Road and Huanghai Road, Que Mountain was the site with the most shells landing at that time. To commemorate this famous battle, a "Victory Monument of the 823 Battle" was specially built in the center of the roundabout, carved from granite and mounted on a tall concrete base, making it a prominent landmark in Kinmen. Passing through the roundabout, one can feel the sacred majesty emanating from this monument.
