825 Victory Memorial Introduction
On August 23, 1958, the shocking "823 Artillery Battle" began. At 6:30 PM that day, the People's Liberation Army of China concentrated 342 artillery pieces of various types to conduct a carpet bombing of the Kinmen area, with shells raining down heavily and dust flying everywhere. In just two hours, over 57,500 shells were continuously fired. Two years after the 823 Artillery Battle (in 1960), the People's Liberation Army launched smaller-scale artillery battles known as "June 17" and "June 19," and continued to fire intermittently under the strategy of "single firing, double abstention" until the end of the artillery battle era was officially declared in 1978. In total, the People's Liberation Army fired 474,910 various projectiles, setting the record for the highest density of artillery fire in the world. Que Mountain, located at the intersection of Huandao East Road and Huanghai Road, was the place that received the most shells during that period. To commemorate this famous battle, a "823 Victory Monument" was specially constructed in the center of the roundabout. The monument is carved from granite and sits atop a high arched cement base, making it a prominent landmark in Kinmen. When passing through the roundabout, one can sense the sacred dignity emanating from this monument.
