Battle of Kuningtou Victory Memorial Introduction
On August 23, 1958, the world was shocked by the outbreak of the "823 Artillery Battle." At 6:30 PM that day, the People’s Liberation Army of China concentrated 342 artillery pieces of various types to bombard the Kinmen area in a carpet bombing, resulting in a hail of shells and rising dust. Within two hours, over 57,500 shells were fired. Two years after the 823 Battle (in 1960), the People’s Liberation Army launched smaller-scale artillery battles known as “617” and “619.” Subsequently, they adopted the method of "single strike, double no strike" to continue shelling until formally declaring the end of the artillery warfare era in 1978. In total, the People’s Liberation Army fired 474,910 shells, setting the record for the highest density of shell impacts in the world. Located at the intersection of Huan Dao East Road and Huang Hai Road, Que Mountain was the area with the highest number of shell impacts at that time. To commemorate this famous battle, a "Victory Monument of the 823 Battle" was specially constructed in the center of the roundabout, sculpted from granite and raised on a tall cement base, making it a prominent landmark in Kinmen. Passing through this roundabout, one can feel the sacred dignity exuded by the monument.
