Battle of Kuningtou Memorial Introduction
On August 23, 1958, the world was shocked by the outbreak of the "823 Artillery Battle." At 6:30 PM that afternoon, the People's Liberation Army of China concentrated 342 artillery pieces of various types to launch a carpet bombardment on the Kinmen area, resulting in a torrential downpour of shells, with dust flying everywhere. Within two hours, over 57,500 shells were fired. Two years after the 823 Battle (in 1960), the People's Liberation Army initiated smaller-scale artillery battles, known as the "617" and "619" battles. Subsequently, they continued firing intermittently in a "one shot, two not fired" strategy until the formal end of the artillery battle era in 1978. In total, the People's Liberation Army fired 474,910 shells, setting a record for the highest shell density in the world. Chiu Mountain, located at the intersection of Huandao East Road and Huang Hai Road, was the site with the highest number of shell impacts during that time. To commemorate this famous battle, a "Victory Monument of the 823 Battle" was built in the center of the roundabout. The monument is carved from granite and stands on a high cement base, making it a prominent landmark in Kinmen. As one passes through the roundabout, the sacred dignity emitted by this monument can be felt.
