Shataogong Rice Dumpling Introduction
In Tainan, "cai zong" refers to rice dumplings wrapped in pouches made of the leaves of the shell ginger plant, and it is a common breakfast food. Lao Zheng's cai zong has a special feature: it does not include peanut powder. Lao Zheng explains that their peanuts and glutinous rice are of high quality, and adding peanut powder would mask the original flavors of the ingredients. Moreover, not using peanut powder enhances the fragrance of the shell ginger leaves. A simple dumpling accompanied by miso soup makes for a wonderful morning scene in Tainan.
