Algal Reef Ecological Environment Classroom Introduction
Taiwan has a rare algal reef-themed educational facility. Did you know that Taiwan boasts a natural algal reef with over 4,000 years of history? Located in the Xinyu District of Taoyuan City, the "Algal Reef Ecological Environment Classroom" is one of the few ecological education venues in Taiwan focused on algal reefs. The algal reef terrain extends a total of 27 kilometers, starting from Zhuwei Fishing Port in Dayuan District and ending at Yong'an Fishing Port in Xinyu District, making it the largest and most intact algal reef area in Taiwan. This site not only witnesses the trajectory of natural evolution but also harbors rich biodiversity and precious coastal resources. Who would have thought that this lush environmental education center was formerly Yongxing Landfill, which had been closed for over ten years? To protect this rare coastal ecosystem, Taoyuan City Government invested 15 million TWD for its renovation, officially opening in 2019, transforming it into a sustainable space for education and recreation. Inside, through methods such as physical observation, multimedia interaction, and sensory experiences, it introduces the formation and evolution of algal reefs, common intertidal organisms, and the mangrove ecosystem of Xinyu Creek in an easy-to-understand manner. Not only is it a classroom, but also an outdoor adventure base. In addition to indoor exhibitions, visitors can participate in outdoor tours led by professional guides, visiting mangrove boardwalks and observing the new algal reef protection area. Ecological observation experiences are arranged according to tidal times, allowing tourists to witness the rich ecology nurtured by porous algal reefs, akin to embarking on a natural adventure to explore oceanic mysteries! A paradise for children, the classroom also contains a warm and cute reading area, offering several award-winning works selected from the city's picture book competition, enabling children to cultivate care and love for the environment through reading. Wooden chairs, playful storybooks, and natural light create a suitable learning corner for parents and children to enjoy together, allowing young travelers to become little environmental warriors. The shared action of ecological guardianship, the "Algal Reef Ecological Environment Classroom," received certification as an "Environmental Education Facility" from the Environmental Protection Administration in 2021. It is jointly operated by the city government and the Yongxing Community Development Association, committed to sustainable goals of conservation and education. This place is not only a tourist attraction but also an action base that awakens environmental awareness and congregates local forces. Visitors to this ecological classroom can feel the millennial pulse of Taiwan's coast, loving the ocean and protecting the algal reefs together!
