Niu Jiangjun Temple Introduction
The Niu Jiang Jun Temple is located in Shuibiu Village, Taibao City, Chiayi County, which is the place where Han Chinese first settled. Inside, there is a statue of a large black water buffalo, accompanied by a shepherd holding a cattle whip. According to legend, when Koxinga came to Taiwan to develop the land, he brought eight water buffaloes to assist in farming. However, cultivating the wasteland was very challenging, and with more fields than buffaloes, these animals eventually perished from overwork. As a result, the early settlers built a water buffalo temple to honor the buffaloes and to commemorate the hardships faced by their ancestors. Even today, the Niu Jiang Jun Temple remains a vibrant place of worship, attracting a steady stream of visitors throughout the year. The stone mortar in front of the buffalo is regularly adorned with fresh grass, flowers, fruits, sugarcane, and a bucket of clean water, making it a significant feature of the community.
